President's Corner

Hello everyone.  I’m reporting from Manitoba while enroute west along Trans Canada-Highway # 1.  The scenery along the way is gorgeous and we are thoroughly enjoying this vacation excursion.

The Finnish Canadian 2006 Grand Festival or Finn Fling which was held in Thunder Bay, Ontario on the weekend of July 15 is over, but definitely not forgotten. The mostly Finnish visitors from all corners of the world were treated to a splendid variety of cultural delights.  The Amerikan Laulajat (AL) performed with precision and style.

AL members were hosted and choral events were arranged by the Otava Male Choir who superbly handled every detail.  We extend our sincere gratitude to you, you made us feel welcome indeed.  Kiitos Anja ja pojat.

The opening ceremony, on Friday the 14th, was held outdoors with approximately five hundred visitors, participants, and dignitaries in attendance.  AL performed both the Canadian and Finnish national anthems under the direction of Anja Haavisto.

A Saturday AL rehearsal was held in preparation of our performance during the Hilldale Lutheran Church Sunday service and our Sunday evening concert at the Community Auditorium.  At the church service AL sang “Jumalan Kunniaa luonnossa” directed by Paul Hietala from Toronto and “My Lord What a Morning” directed by Heikki Perttu from Florida.  And the concert numbers were “Laulun maa” directed by Anja Haavisto and “Tämä taivas, tämä maa” directed by Paul Hietala.  Also on Saturday AL took part in a very enjoyable Finnish folksong jam session held at the University.

The next AL meeting, which we are all looking forward to, will be in Toronto this October.  The Toronto Male Chorus will be celebrating its 50th anniversary and AL will convene its 2006 annual meeting. We are anticipating a very fulfilling and productive gathering.  Following our get-together my RV will point toward Florida where another busy singing season awaits.

Sad news was received from Sudbury.  Aura, Bill Koivu's lovely wife, passed to eternal light after a long illness.  We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to Bill and his family.

Best wishes and a healthy summer to all members of Amerikan Laulajat.  See you in Toronto.

Harry
